Chapters 1 and 2 (I and II): Nick says that he does his best to reserve judgments on everyone. Do you believe him? Does he judge people? Is he a reliable or unreliable narrator?
Chapter 3 (III): Now we've seen three "places," East Egg, West Egg, and New York City. Contrast the three places. What is Fitzgerald trying to say with these contrasts? Does anybody seem happy anywhere? (Notice the symbols!) Why/why not?
Chapter 4 (IV): Ah-ha! Now we get the Gatsby and the Daisy stories. How much of each story does Nick believe? How much do you believe? How do the POV shifts in the story telling contribute to the reliability of the stories?
Chapter 5 and 6 (V and VI): Compare Gatsby and Tom. (Notice the symbols!)
Chapter 7 (VII): Who is most at fault for these events? (According to Nick? According to Fitzgerald? According to you?)
Chapter 8 (VIII): Does the tone shift in this chapter, or is it consistent with the rest of the book? Why?
Chapter 9 (IX): What is Fitzgerald's comment about the 20s?
